Because of their ability to hide in small crevices, you can generally find bed bugs in mattresses and box springs — hence, why they are called bed bugs. They also dwell in headboards, furniture and electrical outlets.

Bed Bugs 101: What are they?
Bed bugs are tiny, brown insects that feed on blood. Before feeding, they are generally flat with a hard shell, but after feeding, they swell and change color. There are two main types of bed bugs, and their size ranges from 1 to 7 mm long, so they are incredibly small.
Bed bugs are often a taboo subject, but they are relatively common in the United States. There is this idea that bed bugs exist in dirty places, but that could not be further from the truth. Bed bugs feed on blood – so you can find them wherever you find people.

How do I Know I have Bed Bugs?
An indication of bed bugs is skin irritation and bug bites, but you should seek medical attention to determine if you have bed bug bites. If you do get bitten, you may feel intense itching, you may see red bite sites, and you may get a secondary infection from the intense itching. You can also have psychological symptoms from bed bugs, including intense anxiety or fear or sleeping in your bed. Some people have reported panic attacks and sleep difficulties.
You can also do a physical check of your bed frame and mattress to see if you have bed bugs. While small, bed bugs are not microscopic, so you can see them with the naked eye. Due to their size, though, you will often find them in tight spots, crevices, and along the seams. Shine a bright flashlight around your mattress and bed frame, particularly in crevices in your bed frame or the stitching around your mattress. You can look specifically for bed bugs, but you can also look for blood droppings or eggs. Sometimes, you may see gold-colored shells that are left behind after molting.
Why are Bed Bugs Dangerous?
While bed bugs are unlikely to carry diseases, their bites are very irritating and can lead to worse skin conditions. You may also have major sleep disturbances due to being uncomfortable sleeping in a bed with bugs.
Untreated bed bugs can sit on clothes, infested furnishings, or pets and travel to nearby places, spreading the infestation to other families. They can survive up to a year without feeding. Early and intense treatment is necessary to prevent these negative effects.
